Septic service in Madison County

Pumping, inspections, drain field repairs, and permit questions across Huntsville, Madison, New Hope, Gurley, and the rest of the county.

Madison County is the largest market in north Alabama and the one where septic questions come up most often for a specific reason: Huntsville has grown outward fast, and the land it has grown onto was rural. Inside the city, most property is on sewer. Cross into Harvest, Toney, Hazel Green, Gurley or Owens Cross Roads and you are back on onsite systems, frequently on parcels being built for the first time.

Where septic permits are handled

Madison County Health Department, Environmental Division

(256) 533-8726

8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

ADPH also publishes a toll-free environmental line at 1-800-819-7644. Madison is more explicit than most counties about the sequence: a permit must be obtained before installing a new system or making repairs, an inspection is scheduled before installation, and the department issues an 'Approval for Use' before the building can be occupied.

That is the county health department, not us. Permits go through them.

What this office publishes for onsite sewage

  • Onsite sewage permits for property not connected to public sanitary sewer
  • Pre-installation inspections
  • Approval for Use issued before a building may be occupied
  • Repair permits for existing systems

What is not published online

Things people look for that Madison does not put on its website. Rather than guess, here is what you will need to call about.

  • A street address for the Environmental Division is not published on the department's page.
  • Permit fees are not published online.
  • Inspection scheduling lead times are not published.
