Locate and uncover
The tank lid gets located and dug out if it is buried. If you have a records diagram from the health department, it saves time and money here.

Pump the tank
Both compartments get pumped, not just the first one. A tank pumped on one side only fills back up fast and you paid for half a job.

Check the components
Baffles, effluent filter, and tank condition get looked at while it is open. This is when problems get caught cheap instead of expensive.

Haul and dispose
Septage disposal is regulated in Alabama under ADPH Chapter 420-3-6. A licensed pumper handles it legally. That is part of what the license is for.

- How often should I pump?
- EPA says household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years, with an inspection at least every three. Household size and tank size move that number more than anything else.
- Do I need to be home?
- Usually helpful but not always required. If the lid location is known and access is clear, many pumpers can work without you there.
